Is the Certificate in TESOl from NSLS a recognised qualification in NZ and overseas?
Yes.

The NSLS Certificate in TESOL is a qualification on the NZQA website. That means that it is recognized as a teaching qualification in New Zealand.

  • There are many TESOL providers in NZ that provide 4 week and 5 week TESOL certificates but these are not NZQA qualifications, they are TESOL courses.

  • To be a recognized New Zealand NZQA qualification a TESOL programme must be more than 40 credits. The Certificate in TESOL at NSLS is 48 credits.

  • Only NZQA qualifications are eligible to provide Student Loans and Allowances. Our teacher trainees are able to access student loans and allowances for the Certificate in TESOL at NSLS. NSLS is the only private provider of a TESOL qualification with approval to offer Student Loans and Allowances.

Graduates from NSLS are well-qualified to teach overseas.

  • For teaching overseas, our programme combines our New Zealand TESOL qualification with the Cambridge University Teaching Knowledge Test (Modules One, Two and Three). The TKT provides evidence of extensive training in teaching theory. Candidates receive three Cambridge University certificates. Cambridge University certificates have international recognition.

  • Employers overseas seek evidence of teaching theory as well as practical skills. We have a lot of graduates from the NSLS TESOL programme that are teaching overseas at the moment.

  • Our TESOL course contains theory as well as practical components, and work experience. Students also receive a Certificate in TESOL from NSLS that shows application of teaching skills in real settings.

The four certificates gained as part of the NSLS programme are recognized in NZ and overseas.

Hey, my name’s Liam Crotty, I attended the NSLS TESOL 2014/15 December to February summer course. I highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to teach English in New Zealand or anywhere else in the world. The 3 months may seem a long time and they were tough ones however, they were very rewarding with lots of laughs and opportunities to make new friends outside your own culture. The staffs at NSLS are very professional, with years of teaching experience, but can be approached for any help you may need along the way. The aspect of this course that made me choose it over any others was definitely the practical teaching experience. This real life practical work can be put down on your resume as authentic work experience, which boosts this certificates credibility and makes this course better than most others. I could go on and on about the benefits of the NSLS TESOL certificate but you will have to find out the rest for yourselves, take the first step, you won’t regret it!

Hi. I'm Gemma. I'm from England and I decided to do the TESOL course in February 2011.
I've wanted to do teaching English for the last four years now. I think it was a fantastic experience and it's very good to have it under your belt. You can travel and go to places like Korea and Japan and everything. So for me, I wanted to do this for personal development and it was fantastic.
It took me back to my school days and learning about nouns and verbs and adjectives. I learnt so much and I loved to come into school as well. It was absolutely fantastic, because when I was younger I hated school but this school is a really nice school. It has a really nice feel about it, really nice atmosphere and everybody was so lovely and helpful because I was the only English person there.
It was great to be around people from different cultures and places. I've made lots of Korean friends and Chinese friends so it has been a really good experience. I loved teaching in the classroom and even though I went bright red, and I was really scared and shaking, it was just a really good exciting buzzy feel and it was just fantastic. Yeah, I loved it.
I'd recommend this class to absolutely anybody and I'm actually trying to get my mum to do it because it's just great. The manager at the school here has helped to point me in the right direction to get a job in Korea. I actually went for an interview a couple of weeks ago so, fingers crossed, I can go in August for 6 months. I'm really excited about the experience.
Do the course it's great!

The 12 weeks spent at North Shore Language School has changed my view on teaching as a whole. I was presented with many options of how to bring information across to the students and came away from it feeling confident and equipped to teach English. The many hours of teaching experience which I was able to acquire, has also given me insight into what a real classroom situation might be like. The teaching staff are highly motivated, dedicated and professional individuals, with many years’ experience in the industry. The Administrative staff and teachers alike, consistently create an atmosphere of respect for each individual, camaraderie, and a sense of ‘can do’. I have shared my positive experience at this Institution with many of my friends and will continue to do so. Thank you for equipping me and for giving me this wonderful opportunity.

I am writing this testimonial in support of North Shore Language School where I attended and achieved a TESOL Certificate this year.

My experience of North Shore Language School and its teaching staff was extremely positive. The teaching of Alison Rankine and Kayt Turner was exceptional. I am an already qualified and practising primary school teacher and the learning I gained has not only given me wonderful knowledge for teaching English to ESOL students but I believe has improved my knowledge of the English language for all students, irrespective of their ethnicity.

The learning I received has re-ignited a passion for both the English language and teaching. I wish to thank the caring staff at NSLS who at all times, supported and nurtured mine and others' learning.

I have no hesitation in recommending the programme for anyone interested in teaching English including those wishing to upskill in terms of professional development.

The best thing about my course was the supportive environment that I was in. I was constantly surrounded by such positive, caring and friendly people that learning was a pleasure. David the owner/manager took his leadership seriously…...he addressed complaints immediately and made sure that his students were happy. NSLS is small school hence the teachers are can give you lots and lots of support on a one on one basis when needed unlike big schools where you’re only a number to them. I must add that the teachers go the extra mile to make things happen for you!(I can’t say more than this). The Director of studies is very involved in the classroom…she takes a class…not just a pretty face! Her passion for teaching is evident. Hence, Alison has first-hand information of students’ needs.

The only thing that could help the course is to extend the duration of the course. As adults and parents we have many other commitments besides the course and it’s nice for us to have more time to digest everything we just learned in school as well as do our homework which is usually lots of reading. This is relevant in the second half of the course where we have to remember plenty of TKT terminology which our diligent teacher Kayt takes us through. She of course wants the best for us because she is a dedicated TESOL teacher but we find it a challenge to keep up with all the textbook reading.

I liked the atmosphere in this school where it wasn’t dominated by any one race or culture even though the majority are Koreans. Everybody has fair chance to be noticed, be supported and be involved.

With so many Educational providers it is very hard to find a school that is not only value for money, but also fun to attend as well as teaching effectively. I found NSLS by recommendation of a friend who graduated from a TESOL course and I spent three very intense months studying for my TKT exam and for the TESOL certificate. I found the teachers very friendly and knowledgeable, the atmosphere very warm and welcoming and the course very well organized and well presented. Not only did I graduate with high marks, but I also made several friends and hope to maintain those friendships for life. I have already recommended NSLS to several of my friends and hope others will find my testimony helpful when deciding which school to attend. Good luck with your studies and career. In NSLS your success will depend solely on you, as all the knowledge and skills will be presented in the most efficient way for you to absorb.
