North Shore Language inspiring future teachers
North Shore Language School in Wairau Rd, Glenfield has been operating as a language school for 9 years. In addition, to offering English classes, the school also conducts courses in teacher training to achieve the TESOL qualification (Teaching Speakers of Other Languages Level 4). This course is popular with both beginning teachers and with qualified teachers who would like to develop further skills in teaching.
Alison Rankine, the Director of Studies, says “We are proud of the supportive and friendly atmosphere of the school. We are fully focused on helping our students reach their goals. The TESOL course is designed to give all trainees many opportunities to gradually develop and practice their skills and this allows the trainees to experience high levels of achievement. During the course, trainees study teaching theory and they also get lots of practice opportunities. All of the theory is closely linked to practical sessions in which the trainees can plan and teach lessons to English language learners. The trainees have a lot of fun in these teaching sessions and get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing their teaching abilities develop, and enjoyment in being able to work with English language learners from many countries around the world. Graduating students have stated that they have developed a passion for teaching during their TESOL course and that it has given them the confidence to consider teaching as a career.
As an important part of their course, the trainees are prepared for the Cambridge University Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT). They learn the theory and they participate in practice tests to ensure they are very familiar with both the content and the layout of the three core modules of the TKT. This qualification is well-recognized internationally. All the North Shore Language TESOL trainees who have sat this test have achieved very high grades – and many have achieved the highest grades that are possible (Grade 4).
The graduating TESOL students have been able to pursue their teaching careers. Some students have chosen to go into direct employment as English language tutors. Other students have chosen to use their TESOL course as a stepping stone into university to do a degree in Teaching in ECE, Primary and Secondary education. Some students plan to travel overseas and teach English in other countries.
The trainees enjoy coming to their course each day because, in addition to achieving a TESOL qualification, the North Shore Language Students develop friendships with their classmates and further develop their interpersonal skills. In the friendly environment at North Shore Language School, each TESOL class quickly forms into an effective team who support and encourage each other and this makes their course a really positive experience. 심희경
친절하고 실력이 많으신 선생님들과 좋은 친구들을 만날 수 있어서
매우 좋은 경험과 추억이 담겨서 좋았었습니다.
뉴질랜드에 어학연수를 결정했을 때 그냥 여기서 하나하나 시작하자는
생각으로 머리를 텅 비운 채 왔었는데 8개월 동안 정말 많은
뉴질랜드의 문화를 배우고 짧은 어학연수
기간이지만 영어실력을 빠르게 키우고 돌아갑니다.
어학연수 공부 중에 text book Headway를 사용하여 공부를 하고,
그리고 TESOL 강의 수업을 들으면서 이 책이 정말 어학을 배우는데 좋은 교재인 것을 깨닫기도 하고
TESOL Resource 부분으로 적합함을 느끼기도 하였습니다. 그저 수업시간에만 집중했을
뿐인데 한마디도 못했던 제가 이제 영어를 사용하여 나의 의사표현 할 줄 아는 걸 생각하면
이젠 제 자신이 뿌듯할 때도 있습니다. TESOL수업은 저에게 Teaching 말고도
General English에서 무언가 부족했던 점을 더욱 보강해주고 영어에 대한 자신감을
조금 더 키울 수 있는 기회가 되었던 것 같습니다.
항상 영어공부 할 수 있는 환경을 만들어 주신 목사님께도 감사 드립니다.
비록 8개월이지만 이곳에 오길 정말 잘했다는 생각과 Language School은
정말 탁월한 선택이었다는 생각을 안고 저는 이제 한국으로 going back 합니다.

처음에 Language School에 왔을 때에 낯설고 영어를 하지 못해서 스트레스를 좀 받았었는데
담당 Bev 선생님을 만나서 정말 훌륭한 가르침 안에서 공부를 하고 그렇기 때문에 현재 TESOL 과정을 끝 낼 수 있었던 같습니다. 처음에 여러 가지 문제로 힘들고 했을 때에 가장 기억에 남는 것은 Bev 선생님이 정말 우리 친할머니처럼 꼭 껴안아 주시며 따듯한 말씀의 편지도 주시고, 그때 주셨던 편지도 아직도 소중히 간직하고 있습니다. 정말 잊지 못할 좋은 추억을 만들어 주신 선생님께 정말 정말 감사드립니다.
그리고 처음으로 kiwi house 방문 한 것도 Bev 선생님 house 였습니다.
초대를 받아서 갔는데 정말 잊지 못할 시간 이었고 만들어 주신 머핀과 핫쵸코렛 역시도 완전 맛있었습니다. 다음으로 Cheryl선생님도 정말 너무 엄마처럼 잘 대해 주셨습니다.
같이 영화도 보러 가고 그리고 뉴질랜드 박물관도 같이 가고 정말 잊지 못할 좋은 추억을 많이 만들어
주셨습니다. 그리고 Joanna 선생님도 저에게 많은 것을 가르쳐주신 분 중에 한 분이십니다.
Intermediate마지막 날 같은 반 classmate와 만든 음식을 조금씩 가져와서 나누어 먹고 선생님이
만들어주신 kiwi style cake도 정말 맛있고 저에게 좋은 경험이었습니다.
마지막으로 Ail 선생님!! 저에게 많은 용기와 격려를 해주시며 정말 멋있고 선생님다운 모습으로 그리고 무엇보다 정말 많은 teaching skills가르쳐 주었습니다. 정말 감사합니다.
그리고 David그리고 Mary sister에게도 정말 감사드립니다.

아래 내용은 제가 공부했던 과정수업의 후기를 적어보았습니다.
Elementary Class- 선생님이 설명을 정말 자세하게 그리고 딱 우리가 필요한 부분을 채워주시는 소리 같았습니다. 게임을 하면서 배운 것도 많고, 선생님께서 포인트를 잘 잡아 주셨고 기초적인
문법을 쉽고 이해가 잘 되도록 설명해 주셨습니다.
Pre-Intermediate- Elementary 에서 배웠던 것들을 다시 한번 되짚어주시고 더 업그레이드 된 문법이나 단어를 배울 수 있는 시간이었습니다. 저 개인적으로는 이 시간에 writing 이나 listening 부분이 많이 늘었던 시간이었습니다. 매일 매일 영어일기를 써서 아침마다 선생님께 체크를 받으며 문법을 저 스스로 체크할 수 있었고, 많이 조언도 해주셨습니다.
Intermediate- Intermediate 레벨 수업을 들으니 전에 배웠던 문법이나 단어들이 차곡차곡 쌓인 것 같은 기분이었습니다. 하지만 처음에 가장 저에게 어려웠던 점은 vocabulary!!
Elementary 와 Pre-Intermediate 와는 다른 단어들이 많아서 조금 힘들었지만 선생님과의 talking time많아서 인지 speaking 이 많이 늘었던 시기인 것 같았습니다.
I never forget everything and everybody!!!
